I was trying to go to Google.com using IE7 when I was surprised to get the message “Make Google you search engine in Internet Explorer”.

What’s even more surprising, and annoyingly so, is that you don’t need that “pop up” Google box to make Google the default search engine. You can do so via a drop-down menu next to the search box in the upper right-hand corner of the browser. So why the hard sell from Google, which has always gone to pains not to barage visiters with such pushy nonsense on its front page (nice, white, and functional Google search page with no dish on your favorite celebs)?
